Blue Cross is on the look out for a new schoolmaster to join its team and help with training and assessments following the retirement of its current horse.
It is an opportunity for an owner who doesn’t want to sell their horse but would like it to have a job to do, or cannot afford or have the time needed to keep it.
When found, the horse will be living at the charity’s horse rehoming centre at Rolleston in Staffordshire and receive the best of care.
“Schoolmasters play a vital role in helping the centre assess the riding and handling capabilities of potential borrowers, as well as helping to ‘nanny’ newly backed youngsters when they begin their hacking and roadwork exercise,” said a statement from the charity.
“If you don’t want to sell your horse but are struggling to keep him or her this could be the ideal opportunity for you.”
The statement said that the charity’s coloured gelding Blue Cross Shadow (pictured above) has been “an exemplary schoolmaster” at its Rolleston centre for 12 years.
However, Shadow is now 20 years old and so he is now retired and enjoying life in a new home as a light hack.
“If you need help this winter looking after and keeping your horse in work, or you are going away to university but don’t want to sell your horse, this could be the perfect option for you,” said horse rehoming coordinator Verity Anderton-Johnson.
“We have a skilled team of horse welfare assistants and 65 acres of year-round turnout so your horse couldn’t be in better hands.”
