Lancashire Mounted Police’s beloved equine colleague Elswick has been retired after 13 years of service. ‘Sam’ joined the force when he was just five and has been an invaluable member of the team.

He attended football matches and protests, as well as joining musical rides, riding courses and aid events. The team said he was a “true gent” and would enter any situation asked of him, as well as allowing more novice riders to hone their skills in the saddle.

More recently it became apparent Elswick had a heart condition which meant it was kindest for him to retire from service, so the team said a fond farewell to their equine companion.

“Elswick has been here at the mounted branch serving as a police horse for 13 years now and has won over everybody’s heart in that time,” said a spokesman for Lancashire Mounted Police. “He really is a true gent and will be greatly missed.

“Elswick always wants to please, even if a bit nervous he puts all of his trust in his rider and would take them into any situation. He is by far the bravest horse we have. Elswick was absolutely one of the go-to horses for any event, no matter how big, you could always rely on him.”

The team said one of Elswick’s biggest events was a Burnley homecoming match where he led the coaches through the crowds and he took it all in his stride. He also went on the pitch at the Preston versus Blackpool game when crowds invaded the pitch.

“He has appeared on many riding courses and has more often than not been everyone’s first horse when they have joined the branch, showing them the ropes,” added the spokesman. “It’s safe to say he will be hugely missed, but it’s time for him to put his hooves up and relax after protecting Lancashire for 13 years.”
