Ascent 1/4 Zip Base Layer
This base layer includes compression panels and promises temperature regulation, UPF 50 sun protection and odour control. It also features a grip strip at the hem for a secure fit. The top comes with long or short sleeves. Our tester trialled the long-sleeved version in medium.
First impressions
This base layer looks gorgeous and has lots of attractive details, including the upper back, which features a stylish criss-cross mesh design. It’s an olive-coloured green (‘relic’) but also comes in navy and black. It gives the appearance of a high quality garment with additional features compared to a standard basic base layer.
Fit
I am a size 10/12 and tried the top in medium. It fits well and isn’t as tight as some base layers, which fit like a second skin and can be quite unflattering. It’s taped hem means it doesn’t ride up and the length is just right for me (I’m 5’6″). The ‘stand’ collar is a comfortable height and doesn’t rub on the chin or cheeks, or flop over like a more standard polo neck collar.
Performance
The fabric feels soft and comfortable with a good amount of stretch. You don’t feel at all restricted when you ride, yet nicely supported. The sleeve length (I trialled the full sleeve) is just right and ends at the wrist without interfering with your hands. It is a good versatile top for the autumn, or winter staple for layering, as the fabric wicks sweat and keeps you cool, dry and comfortable. I’ve worn it for long periods in and out of the saddle and the flat seams means it hasn’t chaffed at all or become uncomfortable. Due to the wicking fabric and UPF properties, this would also make a good option for cross-country, when a long-sleeved top is a must, and you don’t want to overheat or burn.
Value for money
It’s not cheap, nearly £100 for a long sleeved top, and there are cheaper options out there, but I still think it offers good value for a money, thanks to all it’s handy features and attractive appearance. The colour is unusual but would go with lots of different shades of breech/riding tights and black or brown boots, so you would definitely gets lots of wear out of the top if you made the investment.
