The working horse and donkey charity, Brooke, has launched a virtual learning platform which will enable vets and animal health professionals to access animal welfare education in emergent nations.
The Academy for Working Equids (AWE) platform is a revolutionary tool which includes more than 15 bite sized courses on subjects such as recognising equine emotions and how to calculate medicine dosages correctly.
The aim of the platform is to boost equine welfare knowledge by improving access to training. It is already being used in those training institutions linked to Brooke to enhance the local curriculum.
AWE is free to access and is available in multiple languages. It is designed for self-paced learning and can be used on a browser or a smartphone. The courses are available to be downloaded using Wi-Fi, a huge advantage for those vets whose internet or electricity is unreliable.
Sharing knowledge
“I am thrilled to announce the launch of the AWE as a dynamic way of bringing trainers or trainees together quickly to share knowledge. Everyone should have access to high-quality education, but I know this doesn’t always happen in practice,” said Laura Skippen, head of animal welfare at Brooke.
“We want to ensure many more working animals, even where Brooke doesn’t work, have access to compassionate professionals, who have learnt to understand these hardworking animals and know how to provide them with the best possible care.”
Brooke, which is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year, was formed in 1934 by Dorothy Brooke who set out to help hundreds of emaciated ex-warhorses abandoned in Egypt after World War I.
Its work improves the lives of more than one million horses, donkeys and mules each year. It provides veterinary services in some of the world’s poorest communities and trains animal owners in 13 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
