A new scheme has been announced that will allow British Eventing (BE) and Pony Club members to take part in each other’s competitions without needing membership of the other organisation.
Pony Club members will be able to participate in two BE competitions before needing to join BE, while BE members will receive priority booking for two Pony Club events without needing to have membership of The Pony Club.
The initiative will see a pilot scheme introduced at 80cm, 90cm and 100cm levels this year. A statement said the aim of the partnership is to streamline fixtures, mitigate financial stress and increase participation in the sport of eventing.
“Competing in British Eventing provides Pony Club members with opportunities to develop their skills, gain more experience, and progress within the sport,” said Marcus Capel, CEO of The Pony Club.
“Working together reinforces The Pony Club’s commitment to supporting its members and contributing to the growth of equestrian sports.”
‘Exciting and innovative step’
The two organisations will closely monitor the pilot scheme this year and, if it’s deemed successful, there is potential for it to be expanded.
“This is an exciting and innovative step in our ambition to unite the sport for the good of the whole eventing community,” said British Eventing’s CEO Rosie Williams.
“We know from the recent fixtures review that travel can be a major barrier to participation at a grassroots level.
“This initiative is another positive way in which we are looking to tackle this to ensure our members can compete more often throughout the season and encourage more people to continue their eventing journey.”
The organisations have aligned their fixture calendars with the aim of avoiding clashes.
Support of a champion
“As a child who came through the Pony Club, I hugely value the solid foundation children are given in horse care which results in improved horse welfare, so I’m delighted that they are joining forces with BE,” said Pippa Funnell.
“This positive step will also see more events available to more riders, and it gives Pony Club riders the opportunity to compete at BE events where they can watch and learn from more experienced riders.
“It will also open up more opportunities to compete for BE grassroots riders and professional riders bringing on young horses. It’s a win, win for everyone!”
BE is currently running an offer for Pony Club members to receive a 40% new member discount on BE introductory memberships. Visit the BE website for more information.
