Founded in 1952, HorseWorld was originally formed to take in retired working horses who were destined for slaughter. Over the years, the need has changed as more horses than ever before are being abandoned, cruelly treated and neglected.
HorseWorld rescues, nurses the animal back to health, aids with any prosecution involved and begins a program of rehabilitation with each individual animal.
Once horses are rehabilitated; a process which can take years, the charity aims to arrange a new ‘forever’ home with a loaner. The rehoming arm of the charity is always busy, and the charity has found suitable homes for over 300 horses and ponies, all of which are rehomed in the South-West. This allows for speedy home-checking (part of the re-homing process) and regular on-going visits as part of HorseWorld’s commitment to the both the rescued animal and the person rehoming them.
The charity also run Discovery courses aimed at young people who may be outside of mainstream schooling due to learning or behavioural difficulties.
Rescued and rehabilitated horses work with the children in a series of highly interactive sessions to provide a programme of multi-sensory teaching, promoting learning and emotional growth. Discovery provides a safe, supervised, hands-on curriculum of activities, outside the established classroom environment.
