A mediumweight turnout blanket is a wardrobe staple for your horse, and depending on their type and requirements, this type of rug is often used regularly in the winter months.
Clipped finer types may wear a mediumweight horse blanket on milder winter days, or in autumn, while for hairy natives, this level of protection from the elements can suit best when the temperature drops.
There is a lot to consider when choosing which turnout rug will be best for your horse: fit, performance, durability and value for money are just four important factors. With such a large selection of mediumweight turnout blankets on the market, it can be tricky to narrow down the right one for you.
To make it easier, Your Horse’s testing team has rigorously tested the following rugs for two months. Each product is marked out of five for fit, performance and value for money to give an overall rating out of 15.
What is a mediumweight?
A mediumweight turnout rug has a filling of between 150g to 250g and is designed to keep your horse warm while not promoting overheating, so is well-suited to days when you wouldn’t put your horse in their heaviest and warmest rug, but equally don’t think a lightweight or no-fill rug would provide enough protection.Â
Mediumweight rugs come with and without necks, with covers coming integrated into the rug or detachable.
Our selection below has all of these varieties. I find a medium turnout rug with an integrated neck cover particularly handy for my cob, as I can add an extra layer underneath when temperatures drop.
This makes the rug even more versatile and useful, so it’s worth shopping around to find one you love.

Bucas Atlantic 200 Turnout Rug
Fit: “This rug fits really well and I have had no issues with it slipping on my horse because of this great fit. It has a slightly different style around the shoulder, which makes it roomier and allows the horse to move freely. The Click’n Go front closure with magnetic Snap-lock took a few attempts to get to grips with, but it makes fastening the rug so quick and easy once you go – and it saves time, too.” 5 stars
Performance: “The outer material is a 1680 denier ballistic nylon, which feels tough and is showing no signs of wear despite my horse’s best efforts. The lining is soft and helps to keep the coat looking great. My mare always feels like she’s a comfortable temperature underneath and the Atlantic 200 is definitely waterproof.” 5 stars
Value for money: “I would 100% recommend this rug – it is an investment, but you won’t be disappointed.” 4.5 stars
Total score: 14.5 BEST IN TEST!

Swish Equestrian 200g Detachable Neck Turnout
Fit: “This rug fits very well and the neck is a generous length, giving good coverage. I’ve had no issues with the rug slipping or rubbing. All fastenings are secure and easy to use.” 5 stars
Performance: “This is a smart looking rug with the addition of practical reflective strips. The 1200 denier outer material is tough and is showing no signs of wear and tear. The lining in the neck cover isn’t quite so robust and after plenty of wear has a few tiny rips.
“The Swish Equestrian Turnout has kept my horse dry and the 200g filling and the neck cover has ensured that she has stayed warm. I did, though, find that the neck cover occasionally folded up at the bottom near the withers, consequently letting in the rain. However, I like the fact that you have the option of removing it, making the rug more versatile.” 4.5 stars
Value for money: “A good value, quality rug that does the job well.” 4.5 stars

Le Mieux Kudos Turnout Rug 200g
Fit: “This rug is true to size and fits really nicely. The fastenings at the chest are slightly angled, which prevents the rug getting too tight across the shoulders. It is a good depth and the neck cover is an ideal length. There are a few other design features of note, including soft neck pads that enhance the horse’s comfort when grazing.” 5 stars
Performance: “The waterproof outer has stood up to some seriously heavy, prolonged rain. The deep shoulder gusset allows for freedom of movement and the three cross surcingles hold the rug in place even during playtime and vigorous rolling. The Kudos Turnout has a cosy 200g filling and the tough outer material (1680 denier) has been standing up to plenty of use. I also really like the anti-static silky lining, which is a great addition. The only downside for me is that the rug is quite heavy to handle.” 5 stars
Value for money: “There is so much to like about this rug, but it is expensive. It is, however, well worth considering if you need a tough, quality turnout.” 4 stars

StormX Original 200 Combi Turnout Rug
Fit: “True to size, this rug fits nicely. The chest buckle fastenings were a little fiddly, but they held the rug in place well. The StormX Original 200 has stayed put securely with no slipping or rubbing. The integrated neck is a good length and it offers protection from the elements.” 5 stars
Performance: “The 200g filling has kept my horse warm in some nasty weather. The rug has also proved to be waterproof. The outer material is 600 denier, which isn’t that robust and it is already showing a few little snags.” 4 stars
Value for money: “A rug that is excellent value, and if your horse isn’t tough on his rugs I would recommend it.” 4.5 stars

Shires Tempest Original 200 Combo Rug
Fit: “This is a well-fitting rug with good quality fastenings that are quick and easy to use. The neck could be slightly longer and overall the rug tended to fit a little too snugly around the shoulders, meaning it has rubbed my horse very slightly. It’s a good depth, though.” 4 stars
Performance: “A good rug that does the job well. The 200g filling has kept my horse warm. The outer material has suffered a few tiny snags where he brushed up against a hedge, but the material is only 600 denier and so it won’t be quite as tough as some others. Despite all this, it has kept him dry even in heavy, prolonged rain.” 4.5 stars
Value for money: “Very good value for a smart, quality turnout.” 4.5 stars

Fieldmasta 220g Mediumweight Turnout Rug
Fit: “This rug fitted my mare well. I did find the neck cover a little ungenerous in length and depth, which left the top of her neck exposed when grazing. The neck cover is darted and dome-shaped, which is meant to prevent mane loss, but I don’t think the shaping is in quite the right place. It was in the middle of the mane rather than the part that gets rubbed in front of the withers. There are no signs of rubbing at the shoulders and her mane is still looking good, though. All fastenings offer plenty of adjustment and they hold the rug securely in place.” 4 stars
Performance: “This kept my horse dry during some very heavy and prolonged rain. The 220g filling has kept her snug, but I did find this Fieldmasta a little heavy to handle. The outer material is a tough 1200 denier and there are no signs of damage despite her being turned out with other horses who like to play. To recap, the length of the neck portion meant that she did get wet and muddy at the top of her neck” 4.5 stars
Value for money: “Fair value for a quality rug.” 4 stars
