Winter riding can equal a sweaty horse, so follow expert groom Jenny Ellis’ step-by-step advice for getting him dry and comfortable after each workout.
Clipping your horse can help to prevent your horse sweating up too much, but it’s still important to ensure he’s completely dry before you rug him up and turn him back out in the field after a ride.
Once untacked, sponge your horse off, paying particular attention to the areas where the tack goes to prevent any rubs or soreness from old sweat.
Dry any damp places thoroughly with a towel and put on a cooler rug to help him dry off completely. Feed him a handful of hay while you’re waiting, as the process of digestion can give off a lot of heat and keep him warm.
Once you’re sure he’s dry, change his rug and pop him back out in the field with his mates.
