Working horse and donkey charity Brooke has released their 2024 Christmas animation which highlights the importance of handling animals compassionately.

Entitled ‘Handle with Care’, the animation, which is just over a minute in length, has a voiceover by Ted Lasso actress Annette Badland.

The animation is based on the true story of Ismelda and her horse Caballito who live on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua.

Caballito was badly treated by his previous owner and consequently was too scared to be handled. Ismelda was unsure what to do so she sought training by Brooke and its local partner, Biometepe, who help to improve animal welfare in the area where they live, to learn how to communicate with Caballito.

Ismelda implemented her training and began to understand what Caballito was telling her. She built a feeding station to ensure Caballito was well nourished and over time they have strengthened their bond and developed a great relationship.

The importance of trust

“I’ve really learned a lot about how to handle and take care of them (her horses)”, said Ismelda.

“They come to trust you, just like you trust them”.

Poor handling by humans can lead animals to experience anxiety, fear and life-long trauma. By handling animals compassionately, owners can reduce their pain.

Brooke works with communities, local health providers and policy makers to create a better life for working animals and their owners.

The charity recognises that working animals are an essential part of many communities around the world and without them many people would be unable to earn a living, provide food for their families and send their children to school.

“I’m so proud to have been part of Brooke’s animation this year, which highlights the importance of giving working animals the love and respect they deserve,” said Annette.

“Working animals, just like all animals, do so much for humans and handling them with compassion helps give them a life worth living.”
