There will be more chances for riders and their ex-racehorses to qualify for Horse of the Year Show (HOYS) thanks to further qualifiers being added to the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse series.

Owing to the increasing popularity of the series, spaces for two additional finalists have been added, making a total of 14 thoroughbreds having the chance to compete in the finals at HOYS.

The remaining qualifying shows for 2024 range from ‘showcase’ events, including The National Hunter Supreme Championship Show and the main arenas at both the Defender Burghley Horse Trials and the NAF Five Star International Horse Trials at Hartpury, through to lower key, indoor shows.

The Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier at the National Hunter Supreme Championship Show will now be held on the Monday of the show – 19 August at 8am. The judges remain, as per the schedule, as Katie Hunnable-Jerram (Conformation) and Jody Sole (ride).

Two thoroughbreds apiece will qualify at Equifest, The National Hunter Supreme Championship Show and SEIB Search for a Star at Hartpury. There will be one qualifying ticket at the NAF Five Star Hartpury International Horse Trials and one at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials.

“We are delighted to be holding a Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifier for Horse of the Year Show for the first time at this year’s National Hunter Supreme Championship Show,” said Sports Horse Breeding GB (SHBGB) Chair, Emma Gibson. “The Society was founded for the promotion of thoroughbred stallions and breeding and now has expanded to include most breed types. It is a pleasure to highlight the thoroughbred horse at our show.”

SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse organiser, Nicolina MacKenzie added: “We are thrilled to be holding a qualifier for the first time at the National Hunter Supreme Championship Show. We secured an additional two Racehorse to Riding Horse places at HOYS in 2023 for amateur riders who now have their own exclusive qualifier. This has led to increased options for all our competitors and we are very much looking forward to working with the National Hunter Supreme Championship Show.”

The remainder of the 2024 SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse qualifying shows are as follows:

  • Saturday 10 August at Hartpury College
  • Tuesday 20 August at the National Hunter Supreme Championship Show, Addington Equestrian
    Centre
  • Monday 26 August 2024 at Hartpury College
  • Sunday 8 September at The Defender Burghley Horse Trials
