The impressive team work of firefighters, vets and owners has been captured when a veteran gelding was saved from a ditch.

Jack, 21, fell into the muddy ditch at his yard in Wythall on 11 January and became trapped. Emergency services were contacted when he was discovered in his predicament and rushed to the scene.

A Technical Rescue Unit based at Bickenhill and Wednesbury assisted Solihull and and Bickenhill Fire Station crews with a tractor and carefully pulled Jack onto solid ground.

The team were assisted by vets and Jack’s owner, Lauren McEwan.

The rescue operation was completed in two hours, with the help of a local farmer and other riders.

Lauren has owned Jack for more than 17 years, and said he was recovering from the “stressful and scary” incident, after being checked over by a vet.

Solihull Fire Station shared a humorous update after they successfully completed the rescue.

“We ‘hoofed’ it to a job this morning, without ‘stall’ing, to rescue the ‘Mane’ man Jack who had taken a tumble into a ditch,” they said.

“We had to call on more ‘horse power’ and Bickenhill Fire Station – Technical Rescue as well as a tractor, the horse owners, local vets and Ella the German shepherd joined us for a successful rescue.

“Jack is now in a ‘stable’ condition well done to all involved.”
