The Racehorse Sanctuary has been targeted by thieves and lost nearly £6,000 worth of equipment.
Thieves targeted the charity’s yard near Pulborough, West Sussex, and stole a Mule ATV, car batteries used to power electric fencing and other yard and groundskeeping equipment.
All of the items stolen were vital for staff to carry out their day-to-day work caring for the sanctuary’s horses.
“The theft comes at a time when we have been trying to rebuild and look to the future after an extremely tough 18 months,” said a statement on Facebook.
“The recent times have really limited fundraising opportunities for us, as well as many other charities, hitting us particularly hard when demand for the rehabilitation and ongoing care we offer has risen.”
Trustee Catherine McIlwraith added: “Our staff work hard to care for as many horses as possible in their working day so that the charity can offer help to all ex-racehorses when they leave training.
“Our ATV was invaluable for caring for horses kept out at grass, enabling the staff to take water, feed and veterinary supplies to the fields.
“Without it they are instead walking back and forth, taking up valuable time which should be spent caring for more horses. The £6,000 cost to replace the equipment puts a dent in our finances which will be hard to fill at this time.”
The Racehorse Sanctuary has helped hundreds of horses find a new home.
“Our knowledgeable and well-regarded team has been trusted with the care of some true legends of the track, with renowned chaser Pete The Feat retiring to the yard earlier this year,” added Catherine.
“The ethos of ensuring every horse has a chance at a new life also means that the charity cares for some long-term residents who cannot be rehomed for physical or behavioural reasons.”
The sanctuary is asking for donations to help it replace the stolen equipment. it is also possible to become a friend of the charity with an ongoing monthly donation.
