Police are appealing for more information after a woman and four horses were killed as a result of a crash in the middle of the night between a car and van in Scotland. The accident happened near the village of Howwood in Renfrewshire at 3.10am on Monday 23 September.

A Mercedes A-class car and a MAN box van collided on the A737, leaving a passenger in the car, a 59-year-old woman, dead.

The driver of the car, a 52-year-old male, another passenger, a 33-year-old male, and the driver of the van, a 59-year-old male, were all taken to hospital for treatment.

Four horses died after being struck by the vehicles while the remaining two were led to safety. Around the time of the crash, motorists had reported six horses running loose on the road.

The road was closed for around 11 hours while investigations took place, eventually reopening at 2pm on Tuesday.

“We are providing support to the family of the woman who died as our enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of this crash,” said Sergeant Jack Swindells.

“We would appeal to anyone who was driving on the A737 on Monday morning around the time of the crash who either witnessed the crash take place or seen the horses running on the road.”

“Anyone with dash-cam footage is also asked to please contact us as soon as possible.”

Police Scotland have asked anyone with information to contact 101 quoting incident number 0291 of 23 September.
